Good vibes & good food at Rotterdam's new, urban BACKYARD!
Mid-April, it was finally time, with the help of crowdfunding, Wiwi & Yunlai started their first plantbased and vegan friendly restaurant on the Korte Hoogstraat in Rotterdam. And with plantbased you can make Sasja and me pretty happy, so time to take a look at this urban city garden (don't be fooled by the way: it's all inside!).
BACKYARD is best described as a fresh, innovative, young, feel-good spot with a homely feel. It's an all day formula, which means that you are really welcome all day long. From 9 o'clock in the morning, they are ready for you and you can go for a coffee to-go or a delicious breakfast. But they also offer an extensive lunch, a tasty dinner and a cozy drink with friends. Do you have lots of work to do? Then just open your laptop at the long work table in the back and do your thing for a few hours.
As you can expect from a real urban garden: green, industrial and vintage blend effortlessly together and create a very relaxed vibe. The corner with the peacock-patterned chair is perfect for Instagram shots, but our attention was drawn to the real eye-catcher here: a three-dimensional tree (including a swing, we love it!) that connects the two floors of BACKYARD. The succulents, colorful bouquets and small pieces of art from, among others, birds complete the garden feeling!
Okay, on to the food. So you can go here for surprising vegan dishes, locally roasted coffee, tasty drinks and refreshing cocktails. Everything is served without unnecessary additions and where possible there is a cooperation with local suppliers. According to Wiwi, about 80% of the dishes on the menu are vegan, but also for non-vegans there are enough goodies on the menu! Would you like to have an egg, smoked salmon, goat's cheese or bacon with it? That is no problem at all here. In addition, each dish indicates whether it's free of gluten, nuts, animal products and refined sugars. Certainly a godsend for me, because since I eat gluten free, finding good food has become a lot more difficult. Happy me!
We started just after entering with a glass of fresh watermelon-lemonade, nachos (always in the mood for nachos!) and some flatbread with dips, but it's time to choose a main course now! Sasja went for the Pulled 'Chicken' and I ordered a Mexican Bowl. Both very tasty! Because we were curious about the Vegan Nuggets as well, we also ordered a portion of taht. :) Curious about the rest of the menu? Think overnight oats, avo toast, vegan burgers, well-stocked buddhabowls and hot dishes in which vegetables play the leading role.
We are convinced! BACKYARD is fun for everyone: from students to young mothers with prams and from young professionals to older couples. So be sure to take a look yourself and enjoy the good vibes at Rotterdam's urban, but also green backyard!
