At the Kop van Zuid, across the Maas, you can find Hotel New York, the former head office of the Holland America Line. The place where thousands of Dutch people hoped for a better life and tried their luck in North America. From here, they crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the promised land.
In the early 1970s the scheduled service to America came to an end and the head office moved to Seattle. The building became vacant, but in 1993 Hotel New York opened its doors. A nice place to sleep, but also for lunch, dinner or a cocktail at the bar. And we were invited to try their delicious food and stay the night.

The Grand Old Lady

From the center of Rotterdam, Nynke and I cycle across the Erasmus Bridge onto the Wilhelminapier. On to Hotel New York, also called the 'The Grand Old Lady'. Hotel porter Michel is already waiting for us inside. He shows us the former rooms of the Holland America Line management and the hall with the beautiful stained glass windows where the passengers used to have to report. The history can be experienced throughout the whole building.

Hotel New York RotterdamOld suitcases, photos of passengers and elements that refer to the HAL. For those who believed in dreams, this used to be the place of departure. A beautiful building with a special history. Behind every door, which is opened the old-fashioned way with a key instead of a keycard, a room breathes history. We are also taken to room 101, the purple room where Anouk wrote her album Hotel New York!

Ed’s lunch

We descend the stairs towards the basement, The NY Basement. Here we can expect an amazing lunch with beautiful wines. And when I say amazing, I really mean amazing.

Chef Edward de Ridder is at the helm here and was happy to surprise us with a refined and extensive Italian lunch. Dishes prepared with love and attention, down to the finest details. When I think back to the tasteful ravioli of prawns, the mouth starts watering. Or the marinated tuna served on a gold-colored plate, making it almost a shame to eat. The veal entrecote with green asparagus and white wine sauce, nicely balanced. And not to mention the bonbons and tiramisu! We actually didn't know how to eat any more, but you just have to. The perfection and refined flavors make this lunch a real experience. With each dish we drank beautiful wines that were rich and elegant in taste. But count the dishes and the wines, we left satisfied and a little buzzed, with the key to room 407 in our hands.

Room 407

Hotel doorman Michel's favorite room: "I sometimes book this one for myself." We fully understand him and it is now our favorite as well. Our room is located in the former caretaker's house of the HAL and has a separate sleeping and living area with a style from the 60s and 70s. We were quite full of lunch and danced around the room.

Hotel New York RotterdamWe take a bath, put on our Hotel New York bathrobe with matching socks and flop down on the bed. Time to go to bed. Oh no, dinner is waiting for us and we still need to try the cocktails!

Mary on the contrary

There is a jazzy atmosphere in the basement of Hotel New York and for a moment we feel like Carrie from Sex and the City in New York. We order a cocktail at the 11-meter long bar. They have an extensive cocktail menu from classic cocktails with a quirky twist, to NY Basement originals. Arton, the bartender, asks us what we want and a little later we sip a Bloody Mary, the Garden of Orbium and some other special cocktails.

Hotel New York RotterdamHotel New York RotterdamI think we can call this bar one of the best cocktail bars in Rotterdam, we enjoyed every sip and then turned off the light in the bar. Someone has to do this, right? Unfortunately my alarm went off at 5 am, but Nynke was able to enjoy a delicious breakfast. Even though she was still pretty full of Edward's lunch. ;)
