Rotterdam has a new coffee spot again! Since September, espressobar Joy serves delicious top-quality coffee on the Groenendaal, next to our takeaway favorite Eefje and close to the Cube Houses. We took a look right after the opening.
On a Saturday morning my boyfriend - big coffee fan and connoisseur - and I visit Joy. It is only a week after the opening and the coffee shop is only open for five minutes, but we are certainly not the first guests. We are greeted warmly by owner Joyce - the link with the name seems clear to me - and find a place near the window for the ideal light for the food photos.

Joyce's enthusiasm for her espresso bar is obvious. She tells us that she is actually a tea drinker - there's a large selection of tea on the menu for tea lovers like myself - but her love for coffee got out of hand and led to this new coffee spot.

Joyce did a barista course out of curiosity about the coffee business. It turned out that she liked that so much, that she started to focus more and more on coffee. She even did an internship to learn all the tricks of the trade. Joyce finally decided to cancel her office job and start her own espresso bar.

And what kind of bar! My boyfriend assured me that he had rarely seen a coffee shop with such professional equipment. Now we have a nice and professional device at home, but that doesn't come close to coffee with this machine, he told me. In addition, there are no less than three coffee grinders, because the coffee drinker can choose his favorite bean at Joy. My boyfriend drank an espresso machiato with the beans from Guatamala. Very fruity, well balanced!

The beans are from Single Estate, a coffee roaster near Rotterdam. At Joy, the other suppliers are preferably local. This is how you eat bread from Jordy's Bakery and fresh ingredients from a care farm just outside of Rotterdam.

With the coffee and my tea, we get served an extensive breakfast. Yummy croissants, Jordy's sandwiches with cheese and yogurt with granola and fresh fruit. These parts of the breakfast can also be ordered separately. No fuss, but very tasty. Joyce has consciously chosen not to serve complicated meals or hip superfoods, but to serve straight forward breakfast and lunch dishes. Exactly what she would like to eat in a coffee bar.

For lunch you can choose from other treats, served with Jordy's bread. We see, for example, chicken with pesto and avocado and homemade tuna salad on the menu, but the hummus with za'atar, spinach and pomegranate seeds makes us especially curious. Enough reason to come back again! Do we see you there?
