De Hemel op Aarde
The name means Heaven on Earth — and honestly, it’s not far off. De Hemel op Aarde Rotterdam really is heaven on earth, in Kralingen to be exact. This cosy local gem has been serving up small plates, good wine and feel-good vibes for over 20 (!) years.
What started as a neighbourhood tapas bar has quietly evolved into something a little more elevated. A gastrobar, if you will, without losing its relaxed, warm and familiar charm. The name might suggest otherwise, but the vibe is delightfully down to earth. Inside, it’s always buzzing with happy regulars, an open kitchen and the hum of wine being poured. Outside, there’s a sunny terrace with heaters for when Rotterdam weather does its thing.
The menu is still all about sharing, but forget the classic tapas list. Instead, you’ll find refined seasonal plates with flavours from all over the world. Think crayfish tartare on brioche, yuzu ceviche, burrata the size of your fist, garlicky prawns or grilled Iberico pork. Not sure what to order? The chef’s menu is a great pick for anyone who struggles to choose, offering four generous courses that shift with the season. Heavenly, indeed
